Tips From an Irvine Tutor 5 Last-Minute Tips to Ace Your Finals

Tips From an Irvine Tutor 5 Last-Minute Tips to Ace Your Finals Irvine Private Tutoring Tips: 5 last-minute tips to ace your finals Finals are just around the corner, and many students are scrambling to finish their study sessions on time. Because students will take several tests in one week, finals study can become overwhelming very quickly, and students may experience high levels of stress. The amount of work a student has to do will vary based on their grade level and the subjects that they find most challenging. However, there are some universal tips and tricks that students can use to ace their finals even if theyre starting their study sessions last minute its never too late to book your private Irvine tutor for finals. 1. Get organized The first thing every student should do is get organized. This is especially true for students who are starting their study sessions late in the game. Organization might take a few minutes up front, but it can save students from so many problems later on. The 5 or 10 extra minutes are worth it. Students will know what it is they have to work on the most, which things they have to study first, and which things they need to talk about with their tutor. 2. Look at your current grades Students should also look at their current grades in each class before commencing their finals study. The grade they have in the class going into the final may determine how much time they spend studying for the final exam. Students going into the final with an A will probably be more relaxed whereas students going into the final with a C or C- may want to put in the extra time to get a high score on the final exam (READ: Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: Why Students Struggle With English). 3. Determine how much each final exam is worth Many teachers count their final exams as a full 10% or 20% of the class grade. That means the student’s overall grade in the course could change by a full letter based on how well they do on just one exam. On the other hand, some teachers make their final exam worth almost nothing, and others will give take-home exams or assign a research paper instead of a test. Its important for students to know what theyre getting into before they dedicate time to a particular course of study. 4. Find out if the exam is cumulative Before starting final study students should also determine whether or not the final exam in each class is cumulative. Cumulative means that the final exam covers the entire year and, generally, everything is fair game for the test. Some teachers will have their final exam cover information from just after the midterm up until the last day of class instruction while others still will have the final exam cover only certain chapters or sections of the course. Its essential to know what to study before studying it. 5. Prioritize Students should also sit down with their tutor and prioritize what they need to study. If they have always been an A+ student in English and literature classes, they may only need to do a simple review of that course. Alternatively, if a student has always struggled to achieve a C in their science courses, they will probably need to do some pretty intensive study before finals week. Prioritizing can make a huge difference in any student’s success when it comes to final exams. Dont wait to book your Irvine tutor for finals! 12 Super Searchable Online Phrasebooks for Learning Words in Context

12 Super Searchable Online Phrasebooks for Learning Words in Context 12 Super Searchable Online Phrasebooks for Learning Words in Context Youve heard that phrases are a great way to learn foreign vocabulary.Youd love to start sentence-mining like a pro.You want to  know  how to mix and match vocabulary like a native. One problem. How do you find phrases with with specific vocabulary?Sure, you could start by using your old, tattered paperback phrasebook, but finding specific words takes ages using books. Theyre designed for tourists who want to order a beer so they can simply flip ahead to the category with the right theme.Youve almost resigned yourself to using an automatic translator and your favorite dictionary to build each phrase word-by-word.Hold it right there. Put down the dictionary. How We Find Foreign Phrases  in the 21st CenturyPeople seem pretty adamant about learning foreign vocabulary in isolation. Why dont they teach you chunks of language instead of just one word at a time? The real problem is not that phrases are useless. Quite the opposite, phrases are a great way to use vocabulary in context. They all ow your brain to learn new words in a way thats natural to it. Youll absorb things in easy, digestible chunks (a really cool technique known as chunking). The real problem is just that paper phrasebooks just dont match the needs of the modern language learner. Granted, the phrasebooks offered by Lonely Planet and others are very portable and straightforward to use for travelersâ€"who often have limited internet and technologyâ€"but if youre looking for phrases with specific vocabulary then phrasebooks can be a bit unwieldy.Theyre perfect for travel, but not so good for learning vocabulary by chunking. The solution for chunking is to use a online, searchable phrase resourcesâ€"often known as digital phrasebooks or online phrasebooks. This post provides you with a list of some of the best ones out there. How to Find Phrases with the Right VocabularyFirst, a searching trick. While many of the resources listed below have a built-in search feature, not all of them do. However, this is the 2 1st century. Google can search almost anything and get great results, as can any reputable search engine. So, heres a quick tip for searching any of the sites on this list. You dont even have to go to the online phrasebook website and search for words thereâ€"its even easier than  that.Instead, go to your search engines homepage and search for this:  your desired vocabulary site:the domain. For example, to find phrases containing the French phrase mon oncle (my uncle)  on omniglot.com, youd type  mon oncle site:www.omniglot.com  into the Google search bar. Use the quotation marks whenever you want to search for an exact phrase. Simple.12 Super Searchable Online Phrasebooks for Learning Words in ContextBelow are some of the best, searchable resources for finding foreign  phrases.LingueeLinguee is a phenomenal, multi-language resource. It provides a dictionary written by experts and a really cool search feature. This search draws from billions of bilingual online texts, most which have been professionally translated by humans, providing accurate translations between 25 different languages.Searching in quotation marks will give you results of specific phrases in your target language, showing how translators have solved the translation of this exact phrase in different contexts.Sources are from a variety of settings, including sites devoted to complex language such as business websites, poetry and technical documents. This is a search engine for real world language.By clicking on the more languages on the home page you can translate from any language, not just English, which means this search feature is great for laddering language learning.Google News Search and Google Book SearchGoogle News is not just great for keeping on top of current world events. Its also an amazing tool for language learners to find phrases in context.Firstly, you should choose your target country. There are news sources from many countries in the world. This is great because it means you ca n search, for example, for Brazilian Portuguese instead of European Portuguese.Google Book Search does exactly the same thing, but with thousands of books from the last 200 years. By using the Search Tools option on the results page, you can tell Google to only search new books.Searching for any word in your target language will bring up a load of reliable sources containing that word, which means that you will also get a load of useful phrases used in context. Again, putting a phrase in quotes will return examples of that specific phrase, which is really useful.LinguanautLinguanaut is classic style phrasebook. The huge advantage of it is the number of different languages it covers and the clear layout of its phrases. As well as detailed language-specific lessons in 15 languages, it contains dedicated phrasebooks in 50 different languages, ranging from Arabic to Zulu. Some of them even have audio recordings. You can search this site for specific words and phrases by searching in Goog le your desired vocabulary  site:www.linguanaut.comSingle ServingSometimes you just need a small phrasebook which you can print out and put in your pocket or wallet. If youve ever found yourself in a foreign land with five minutes left on your internet cafe session, desperately searching online for a list of helpful phrases to print out, youll know how hard that precious information  is to find.Amongst its other language resources, Single Serving provides just that: Free, one page, printable phrasebooks in 24 languages. One day, youll thank me.WikipediaLike Google News above, Wikipedia is a vastly under-appreciated language learning resource. Not only does it give you well-written phrases, it gives you whole topic-specific articles in your target language! There are two ways to search for phrases on Wikipedia. One is to navigate to your target language site (e.g. fr.wikipedia.org for French) and use the built-in search. The other is to use Google (e.g. search for: quelque chose site:f r.wikipedia.org) Personally I prefer the second way, as Wikipedias own search looks mostly at the article titles.Your whole Google search results page will look like a long list of highlighted French phrases which contain the words  quelque chose  (something).OmniglotOmniglot is a mega-resource for languages. It is incredible and if you have not checked it out yet I highly recommend you do. Among its resources there are tons of phrases in over 200 languages, including less common languages like Klingon and Pig Latin. The main phrasebook section contains the most common useful phrases in these languages and some even have audio recordings. There is also a fun section marked useful foreign phrases, which includes such phrases as Pe tele ni lupe i le vao nei?  which is apparently Samoan for Are there many pigeons in this bush?If you are learning multiple languages at once, there is also a helpful section where the same phrase is translated into multiple languages on one page.To search o mniglot, youll have to use the Google trick, i.e. your desired vocabulary site:www.omniglot.comSmartPhraseAlthough SmartPhrase only contains 7 languages, it is a great resource for finding phrases in those languages and their equivalents in English. To start you can search for a word or phrase and it will tell you where you can find phrases containing  those words. Phrases are grouped by helpfully specific topics, e.g. Travelling by train, which means that you can easily find only the phrases youll need in a particular situation. It also contains a fun Random Phrase Generator which includes a Test Yourself Mode where the English definition is hidden from you, flashcard style.EngoiDespite its minimalist web design, Engoi is actually an extensive and very useful resource for multi-language learning. For starters, you can choose between 15 interface languages, making it a great option for laddering or comparing two languages. In general, most of the site is just lists of words, not whole phrases. However, what makes this site useful are its use of categories. Very quickly, you can have a list of words relating to, say, parts of a book in one list from which you can start building your own full phrases. Some language pairs also have audio recordings. You can  search only a particular phrasebook by using Google, for example  your desired vocabulary site:www.engoi.com/it/fr  will allow you to search for your vocabulary in the Italian-French dictionary.FluentU Phrase ListsFluentU is an online vocabulary learning system that uses videos from the web to teach you vocabulary in context. The system is a great way to learn phrases in context. However, for finding phrases with particular vocabulary, the language-specific blogs are a good place to start. Many carefully selected phrases are already listed. There are phrase lists on the Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Japanese,  English and Business English blogs. To search the whole site, just search on Google: your desired voca bulary  site:fluentu.com. You can also search phrases from a particular language by specifying one of the blogs, e.g. pensar en site:fluentu.com/spanish/blog  to find Spanish phrases containing that term.NemoApps Audio PhrasebooksLike Engoi above, the free Nemo phrasebooks provide mostly a list of words, not full phrases. However, the most useful thing about it is that each word or  phrase contains an audio recording. It also provides 34 languages and the phrasebooks are available in the form of free language-specific apps with an integrated flashcard functionality.Wikitravel PhrasebooksAlthough quite simple, the Wikitravel phrasebooks are surprisingly useful. It provides phrasebooks in 195 languages, although many of the less common ones are almost empty. However, more common languages have quite a lot of content. Each phrasebook is really one long, long page of phrases. Just check out what youll find by scrolling down through the French phrasebook.Searching within the phrasebooks th emselves is a simple case of using your browsers Find within page function, usually by pressing CTRL-F on the keyboard. The Google search trick does not work well with these, because they are all embedded in long pages of content.LingvozoneThis is a great example of a truly 21st Century phrasebook. Among other language learning resources, Lingvozones phrasebook is multilingual with  up to 45 languages.Phrases are grouped into categories, audio clips are provided and phrases are even presented in a flashcard format. The only slight annoyance is the lack of any search facility within the phrasebooks. As these are not static webpages, the Google search trick will not  work here either. Still, its a highly useful resource for learning phrases.Bonus: Google SearchSo, youve searched all these online resources and you still cant find a good phrase with your target vocabulary?Well, let me say that I dont believe you. However, if you need another option, the best way is to enter your phrase, with quotes, into Google Search. If you want a phrase specifically for language learners then try adding the word phrase outside the quotes in English. For example, to search for the French phrase quelque chose  you can search this in Google: quelque chose phrase. The Internet is full of people who are using your target language. Use it to your advantage. So, what are you waiting for?Find some vocabulary you want to learn and search for some great phrases…its that easy.Alex Owen-Hill is a European freelance writer. Ask a Nerd! IQ vs. SAT by TutorNerds

Ask a Nerd! IQ vs. SAT by TutorNerds Ask a Nerd! IQ vs SAT Question: There are so many different types of tests these days and Im getting confused. Some schools and accelerated programs require an intelligence test but Im already taking achievement tests. What’s the difference between the IQ and SAT test and why do I have to take both? Brief: An intelligence test (IQ test) measures a persons intellectual potential. An achievement test measures what they have learned and comprehended over time. Answer You are right, there are so many tests that students have to take these days. Almost every student will take multiple achievement tests throughout secondary school and post-secondary school. Achievement tests, often called standardized tests, measure what a student has achieved academically thus far. Many incredibly intelligent students dont happen to do well on standardized tests while, on the other hand, some students happen to test well but may not fully understand the concepts or formulas behind the test (READ: A Timeline Study Guide for the SAT). This is a common frustration amongst many high school juniors and seniors studying for their college entrance exams. When it comes to an achievement test, the bottom line is that it is meant to test how well a student has understood their English and math classes and whether or not that student can demonstrate the knowledge that they have learned. Multiple standardized tests There are multiple standardized tests other than the college entrance exams that measure more than just the student’s success. Tests that are taken in elementary and middle school are also meant to measure the achievements of the teachers in a particular school or school district as well as the school district overall. Districts that do not receive high test scores may be identified as needing improvement. Districts that can display high student test scores across the board may be given an award. Some of these tests may also affect the amount of funding a specific school receives from the government. And intelligence test or IQ test is meant to measure the potential of an individual. Educational scholars have various opinions on the validity of IQ tests; some feel that they are excellent and provide accurate results while others ignore them completely. One thing that many educational scholars do agree on is that it is best to give an IQ test to a very young child in order to get accurate results (READ: Emotional IQ vs. Intellectual IQ). Adults and teens may already have too much understanding of the world around them in order to receive an accurate score. Nonetheless, some private middle schools and high schools require that an entering student take an IQ test. In addition, students who have been identified as appropriate for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) in the public school system may be asked to take an IQ test as supporting evidence of their ability to achieve in such a program our Orange County GATE testing tutors are here to help. Why do I have to take both? This brings us to your second question: Why do I have to take both? Theres no specific reason why you have to take both other than that you are required to. If youre applying to a private school or to a GATE program, then you must take the test in order to enroll in the school or enter the program. Almost every student will ask their teacher, tutor, or parents why they must take the SAT or ACT. Unfortunately, the answer is very simple but is generally not acceptable to most students who are feeling overwhelmed: Its required (READ: ACT Tips From a Private Irvine Tutor). I recommend not thinking too much about this and simply viewing standardized tests as a small hurdle that you need to jump over in order to attend college or university. Once you are done with your various standardized tests you can forget about them all together and enjoy higher education in a classroom or research environment. Of course, students who wish to attend graduate school will need to take the GRE at a mini mum. But dont worry about this now; thats a good four to six years away. Organic Chemistry - What is it?

Organic Chemistry - What is it?Organic chemistry requires a serious commitment on the part of the student. This type of science provides the student with a very exciting and fun environment, since he or she can choose from a number of interesting topics to learn. Although not all subjects may be taught in the same way, you will find that many of them do contain interesting scientific theories and laws that the student should be able to remember and understand. Therefore, while deciding on the course that is right for you, make sure that you don't take any courses at school that are too hard for you. When studying chemistry, students will be studying chemical elements that are at the basis of all biological processes. Inorganic and organic chemistry also includes chemical reactions that are used to create materials or chemicals. There are also other topics that the student should be aware of.Theories about such basic chemical elements include the elements silicon, oxygen, potassium, so dium, calcium, magnesium, iron, sulfur, nitrogen, chlorine, bromine, chlorine, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, beryllium, silicon, mercury, aluminum, neon, phosphorus, chlorine dioxide, fluorine, potassium hydroxide, iodine, ammonia, potassium phosphate, boron, and barium. These theories and laws are very important in organic chemistry, as they govern the properties of the elements and the things that they form. Students who study chemistry at the college level will need to learn how these elements are combined, because this helps them understand the relationship between the properties of the elements and their molecular structures. Inorganic chemistry also contains the properties of the compounds that are formed by combining these elements.Students in organic chemistry must be knowledgeable of these properties if they want to know how all the components of life work together. Such knowledge helps students to understand the various ways in which the different materials can be asse mbled into various complex organisms. When it comes to any type of chemistry, it is very important to have an understanding of the properties that occur inevery substance that can be created.Students who are not familiar with these concepts may feel somewhat overwhelmed as they learn how these chemical elements affect each other. One way to ease the effects of the elements is to study various compounds made with certain elements. For example, a student who know that chlorine is poisonous, but wants to make it into an additive that is used to treat water, will study the properties of some of the different compounds that are created when chlorine is mixed with organic compounds. Understanding the different properties of these compounds helps the student better understand how the elements combine and work together.Of course, a student who wants to know how all the chemical components in the food we eat must also know how they combine together to create substances such as proteins, suga rs, fats, and other compounds that we need to survive. Organic chemistry also includes the different types of food that we eat, including meat, milk, vegetables, fruits, and the various nuts and seeds that we find in our daily diets.Organic chemistry has a wide variety of theories that are very important for the student. While some are rather basic, such as how different substances react when they come into contact with one another, many others are more involved. Most science teachers are willing to help students learn about these important principles. A student can usually find online classes that include organic chemistry as one of the classes that they can take.

A Guide to Kickboxing Rules

A Guide to Kickboxing Rules The Rules of the Game and More: Your Essential Guide to Kickboxing ChaptersA Guide to Kickboxing Rules. Some Notes on Kickboxing Ages and Weights. How Does Ranking Work for Kickboxing?Join a Kickboxing Class. The combat sport of kickboxing has a long history â€" bringing influences and inspirations from boxing traditions across the globe. From Muay Thai kickboxing to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo to full-contact Karate, from English boxing to French savate, all of these different combat sports were brought together to form the thing that we, in the west, now know as kickboxing. To this fact we owe the beauty of the sport â€" as well as its potential complexity and heterogeneity. American kickboxing does not necessarily follow the same rules as Dutch kickboxing, just as different world championships â€" run by different organisations â€" do not have the same rules either. So, Glory kickboxing will not be precisely the same as K-1 kickboxing, as each has its own specific regulations. And it should go without saying that Muay Thai boxing and savate are ess entially different sports. Find out more about the different types of kickboxing here. But, for those of you who are looking to get started in the sport â€" or who are just interested in hearing what it involves â€" we’ve put together a guide of the essential things you need to know about the sport. This, in fact, is precisely not what kickboxing is.Rather, the bouts are defined and regulated by a very specific set of rules, which outlaw particular moves, which value particular moves over others, and which provide the structure which allow the fighters to be ranked.Like all martial arts, kickboxing is more about the elegance of the techniques and the agility of the fighter. Just slinging punches and low kicks is never enough. What’s the Aim of a Kickboxing Bout?Let’s start with the fundamental question: what exactly is the point of a kickboxing fight? How do you win it?Whilst many things depend on the particular association under which you are playing, the central aim of essentially all kickboxing matches is the knockout. Quite simply, here, you are aiming to knock the other person out. This can happen in a number of ways. The first, simply, requires that one of the fighters can’t resume the fight â€" either within a count to ten or before that if the fighter needs medical assistance.Otherwise, in Glory kickboxing, there are numerous ways to achieve a technical knockout: if your opponent submits, if the referee determines that your opponent is just totally outclassed, if a doctor says that your opponent cann ot continue â€" or if you have knocked your opponent down three times in a round. This is only a sample of the ways, by the way.Besides a knockout â€" technical or otherwise â€" a fighter can win through points, which are allocated at the end of each round for the quality of the fighters’ fight. If no-one has suffered a knockout, then points are added up at the end. This is how kickboxing matches can end in a draw. You’ll have noticed, however, that fighters are often listed with the number of knockouts they’ve dished out. This, primarily, is the aim. Different types of kickboxing have different rulesHow Do You Score Points in Kickboxing? In Glory kickboxing, points are awarded at the end of the fight only if there hasn’t been a unanimous winner through knockout. At the end of each round, points are noted by the judges â€" of which there are three or five. Scores for each round are one of the following:10-10, in which there is no discernible difference between the two fighters’ performance.10-9, in which one fighter’s performance was better.10-8, in which one fighter’s performance involving knocking down the other (putting them on the floor [‘takedowns’] rather than knocking them out).10-7, in which one fighter knocks the other down twice.Besides the number of knockdowns, the points are awarded for a number of other reasons. These are the amount of damage that one kickboxer inflicts upon the other; the number of ‘spectacular’ or simply ‘normal’ techniques that strike the opponent cleanly; and the degree of aggres siveness. These ‘spectacular’ techniques are those in which ‘flying’ or spinning is involved â€" such as the roundhouse kick or high kick. And the point about aggressiveness is to encourage action: you ain’t going to do very well if you limit yourself to self-defense moves. Giorgio Petrosyan is famed for his defense skills, but he has a wicked attack too.And How Do You Win?As we said above, kick boxing is won either through a knockout or through the quality of your punching and kicking performance.Ultimately, this is all up to the judge’s decision â€" or to the referee’s, if you are fighting at a much lower tier.Any Other Rules You Need to Remember? It’s important to keep in mind some of the other rules of the sport. Whilst in Muay Thai you can use elbows and knees to strike your opponent, only the knees are permitted in Glory kickboxing. The same applies with clinching. This is a common move in Muay Thai, yet, if you want to clinch in Glory, you need to immediately fol low it with a knee strike â€" otherwise it is forbidden and you will be penalised.Otherwise, avoid strikes to the knee, the groin, and the back of the head and back.Glory kickboxing is all about fighting techniques striking with the fists and feet: the jab, uppercut, front kick, hook kick, right cross and sweeps are the sort of things you are aiming for. In short, punch and kick. What is Classed as a Foul?Anything that is not a legitimate move will be classed as a foul. This includes elbow strikes, biting, head butts, or moves from judo or wrestling. Kickboxing is not really a game of grappling. However, you’ll be penalised for a whole range of other things too: passivity, ignoring the ref, spitting out your mouthguard, ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’, or continuing to strike if your opponent is on the ground.Honestly, these are all pretty legitimate. And if you do this stuff, it’s really not a great look. In kickboxing, it's important to play by the rules. Some Notes on Kickboxing Ages and Weights. If you are looking to turn your personal training in kickboxing into something more competitive, then you need to know a few things about the structure of the sport and the different categories under which you might fall. The main ones regard age and bodyweight â€" and, again, they are fairly legitimate. It’s not really on if, as a lightweight black belt you enter the ring with a super heavyweight. Whilst you might be in the best shape, there’s not much chance that you are getting up from a straight punch. How Old Do You Need to Be to Start? The same applies to age â€" and there are three age categories that you need to be aware of in Glory kickboxing.Under the age of twelve, you’re not permitted in the ring. So, take it easy and wait a while if you are any younger than that.
